Allahabad University was founded on September 23, 1887, when Sir William Muir, the Lt. Governor of the United Provinces, envisioned a Central College in Allahabad. His efforts led to the laying of the foundation stone for Muir Central College on December 9, 1873. Muir College, named after Lt. Sir William Muir, eventually evolved into a university and became known as Allahabad University. Initially, Muir Central College was affiliated with the University of Calcutta, but later, following the passage of an Act, Allahabad University was established.
It began as a degree-granting institution, and in 1904, the Indian Universities Act was enacted, which limited its territorial jurisdiction to the provinces of the United Provinces of Awadh and Agra, the Central Provinces, and most of the states of Rajputana and Central Indian agencies. Between 1887 and 1927, 38 institutions from these areas were affiliated with Allahabad University. In 1921, Muir College lost its independent status and merged with Allahabad University following the implementation of the University of Allahabad Act.
The university began establishing its own teaching departments and doctoral research programs from 1904 onwards, with the Senate Hall opening in 1912. In 1951, it recognized several local institutions as associated colleges where some undergraduate courses were offered. In 1992, the state government granted recognition to this premier institution, and in 2003, the Union Cabinet decided to restore its central university status, which was officially conferred in 2005 through The University of Allahabad Act by the Parliament of India.
