Fergusson College

Fergusson College, situated in Pune, Maharashtra, is a private institution. It was founded in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society. The Deccan Society (DES) was established by several prominent figures who played significant roles in India's freedom struggle, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi, and Vaman Shivram Apte, among others. The college is named in honor of Sir James Fergusson, who was the Governor of Bombay Province at the time and the first patron of DES. Fergusson College is recognized by the UGC as an autonomous institution and has been accredited by the NAAC with a Grade ‘A+’. It is affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University and has been awarded the ‘Special Heritage’ status by the UGC. Additionally, it is ranked 79 by the NIRF in 2023 in the ‘Colleges’ category. The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has also granted Fergusson College the status of ‘Star College’.
