Founded in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (commonly referred to as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai) is the first public institution to have its foundation stone laid with support from UNESCO. In 1961, it was recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Indian Parliament. It has also been designated as a 'Deemed University' and operates autonomously. History of IIT Bombay:
- In 1958, IIT Bombay was established as part of a government initiative inspired by recommendations from a committee chaired by Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar.
- The IIT Bombay campus spans 200 hectares in Powai, Mumbai, receiving substantial support from UNESCO and the USSR government, which provided equipment, experts, and fellowships to aid its development.
- While construction of IITB was underway, the institute commenced its first academic session in July 1958 at a temporary campus located in the Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) building in Worli, accommodating around 100 students.
- In 1961, an Act of Parliament granted IIT Bombay the status of an institution of national importance, enabling it to confer its own degrees and diplomas.
- In July 2018, IIT Bombay was awarded the status of Institute of Eminence by the Ministry of Human Resources & Development, alongside five other institutes in the country.
