The Institute of Medical Sciences BHU was founded in 1960, initially comprising 10 departments—9 focused on Modern Medicine and 1 on Indian Medicine. Three years after its establishment, in 1963, the Institute commenced postgraduate medical education as an in-service program. The formal training program led to the transformation of the College of Medical Sciences into the Institute of Medical Sciences by 1971.

IMS encompasses three faculties (Medicine, Ayurveda, and Dental Sciences) and is one of the six institutes within Banaras Hindu University.
