The National Law Institute University (NLIU) was established in 1998 under the NLIU Act No. 41 of 1997 by the Madhya Pradesh Legislature. This law university is recognized by the Bar Council of India and is a member of the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) in India, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Asian Law Institutes (AIL), and the International Association of Law Schools (IALS). Additionally, NLIU Bhopal has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with five international universities.
According to past reports from the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), the law university has consistently ranked among the top 15 law schools in India each year. The university collaborates with the Centre for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP) in Seattle, USA, and Washington University in Seattle for its Academic Exchange Program (AEP).
