Recognized as an Institution of National Eminence by the UGC, Presidency University Kolkata is a state university established in 1817. Previously known as Hindoo College, it became the College of the Bengal Presidency and was affiliated with Calcutta University in 1857. After serving as a prominent constituent college under Calcutta University for over a century, the institution was officially established as a university in July 2010. It is recognized by the UGC and accredited by NAAC with an "A" Grade.
The University comprises 17 departments offering UG, PG, and PhD programs in Arts and Science specializations. Admission to all courses provided by the University is based on entrance exams each year. However, for the academic year 2021-22, the entrance exams conducted for UG and PG admissions by WBJEEB, namely PUBDET and PUMDET, have been canceled. All admissions for this academic year will be determined based on merit in the last qualifying examination.
