The Bar Council of India (BCI) has officially released the syllabus for the All India Bar Examination XXII (AIBE 22) for 2026. This announcement provides law graduates and aspiring practitioners with the necessary framework to structure their study plans, as it details the specific distribution of questions across 19 distinct legal subjects.

The upcoming examination will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions, with each question carrying one mark, totaling 100 marks for the entire paper. The exam is scheduled to last three hours and 30 minutes, and as per the current guidelines, there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Candidates are encouraged to review the official syllabus PDF to understand the weightage assigned to each topic, which serves as a critical tool for prioritizing revision efforts.

Subject-Wise Weightage and Exam Structure

According to the newly released syllabus, certain core areas of law carry significantly higher weightage. Constitutional Law, the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), and the combination of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) each account for 10 questions, making them the most prominent sections of the test. These three areas alone represent a substantial portion of the total marks available.

Following these, several subjects are allocated eight questions each, including the Indian Penal Code (IPC) alongside the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Evidence Act paired with the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), Family Law, and various contract-related subjects. Law of Tort, which encompasses the Motor Vehicle Act and Consumer Protection Law, is set to feature five questions.

The remaining sections of the syllabus are divided into smaller segments. Alternative Dispute Resolution, Public Interest Litigation (PIL), Professional Ethics, Labour and Industrial Law, and Taxation Law each carry four questions. Administrative Law is assigned three questions, while Company Law, Environmental Law, Cyber Law, the Land Acquisition Act, and Intellectual Property Laws each contribute two questions to the total. While these latter subjects carry lower individual weightage, they remain essential components of the overall examination.

Preparation and Exam Context

The All India Bar Examination is a mandatory assessment conducted by the Bar Council of India to evaluate the legal proficiency of candidates who intend to practice law in India. Successfully qualifying for this examination is a prerequisite for obtaining the Certificate of Practice (CoP), provided the candidate meets all other applicable regulatory requirements.

By providing a clear breakdown of the 19 subjects, the BCI aims to help candidates organize their preparation effectively. Aspirants are advised to use the official syllabus document to balance their study time, ensuring that high-weightage subjects are mastered while still maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the entire legal curriculum. Candidates can download the official AIBE 22 syllabus PDF from the authorized BCI portal to begin their preparations.
