DU allows students to exit after 3 years under new 4-year course system

Students at Delhi University enrolled in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) can now exit after completing three years with a degree. This move follows NEP 2020 guidelines. After six semesters, students can earn either a general or Honours degree, depending on their career goals and guidance from advisors.

Starting now, Delhi University students who are part of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) have a new option. After completing three years (six semesters), they can choose to exit the programme early and still earn a valid degree.
This option is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to give students more flexibility in deciding how long they wish to continue their studies. Depending on the duration of study, students are awarded different qualifications.

Who can take this option?

  • Students who enrolled in the FYUP under the UG Curriculum Framework 2022.
  • Those who have successfully completed six semesters, which is equal to three full academic years.

What will be their Qualification?

  • Students enrolled in a multi-disciplinary programme will receive a regular three-year undergraduate degree.
  • Those enrolled in a single-subject (Honours) programme will be awarded an Honours degree after three years.

How to apply?

  • Eligible students need to log in to the university portal.
  • They must submit their intention online if they wish to leave the programme after completing three years.

What should students consider?

  • It is important for students to carefully think about their academic and career goals before making a decision.
  • They are encouraged to speak with mentors, teachers, or academic advisors to ensure that leaving after three years aligns with their future plans.

Why this change matters

This option reflects the NEP 2020’s focus on giving students more control over their educational path. It also comes as Delhi University prepares to roll out the fourth year of the FYUP, which will focus more on research, specialised learning, and skill-building.
While this is seen as a positive step towards giving students more choices, there are concerns about whether colleges have the required infrastructure, updated courses, and trained faculty to support the new structure effectively. University officials have stated that they are working to improve research facilities and skill-development resources, and hope the fourth year will help provide students with a more well-rounded academic experience.

What lies ahead:

Apart from launching the fourth-year courses in August, Delhi University is also weighing in on infrastructure and teaching readiness—areas flagged as needing attention to ensure this new structure works smoothly.
Vice‑Chancellor Yogesh Singh emphasised that although facilities are still being built, this model—with its focus on research and skills—will significantly transform undergraduate education.
In conclusion, from July 2025 onwards, Delhi University students can either finish their degree after three years with a recognised qualification or continue for a fourth year to gain deeper academic exposure. This new option is designed to provide greater flexibility and better align with individual goals.
