The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has unveiled plans to establish the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, marking a significant development in the country's academic landscape. This new institution is designed to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and the physical sciences, with a primary focus on robotics, computational engineering, and advanced scientific research.
The initiative is supported by a total investment of INR 35 crore. Funding for the project is being sourced through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the institute, alumnus and philanthropist Vinod Gupta, and the IITKGP Foundation USA. Under this agreement, the Vinod Gupta family will contribute INR 12.5 crore, while an anonymous alumnus has pledged INR 10 crore. The remaining balance will be provided by IIT Kharagpur to facilitate the necessary infrastructure and support the Department of Artificial Intelligence.
The Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI aims to foster the development of intelligent systems capable of interacting with the real world. By integrating AI with physics, biological systems, and engineering, the school intends to create a collaborative environment for researchers, engineers, and industry experts. The curriculum and research agenda will cover a wide array of emerging technology sectors, including intelligent robotics, autonomous systems, and physics-informed machine learning.
Beyond core engineering, the school will explore applications in critical fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental technology. Key research areas include the development of digital twins, advanced sensing technologies, AI-enabled experimentation, and intelligent infrastructure. By bringing together professionals from medicine, life sciences, and physical sciences, the institute seeks to produce practical, reliable AI-based solutions for complex real-world challenges.
Subject to the necessary academic approvals, the school is scheduled to commence its academic programmes in the upcoming session. The proposed offerings are designed to cater to a diverse group of learners, including students, researchers, and working professionals. The institute plans to introduce hybrid-mode master's programmes, executive education, and professional certification courses.
These interdisciplinary modules are intended to help graduates and industry technologists integrate modern AI skills into their existing subject expertise. By providing specialised learning paths, the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI aims to equip the workforce with the tools required to navigate the evolving intersection of computational engineering and scientific research.
