The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the schedule for the JEE Main 2027 examination, with the first session set to commence on January 22, 2027. As the examination date approaches, students are encouraged to carefully evaluate their eligibility status and align their preparation with the specific admission requirements of their target institutions. Understanding these criteria is a critical first step for all aspirants, including those considering a drop year.
JEE Main serves as the primary gateway for admissions into National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and various other participating institutions. Furthermore, it functions as the mandatory qualifying examination for those aiming to appear for JEE Advanced, which is the prerequisite for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Given the competitive nature of these institutions, candidates are advised to verify their credentials against official guidelines well in advance of the registration process.
To be eligible for the JEE Main 2027 examination, candidates must satisfy specific criteria regarding their Class 12 or equivalent qualification. Only those who have passed their Class 12 examination in 2025 or 2026, or those currently appearing for the Class 12 examination in 2027, are permitted to participate. Consequently, individuals who completed their Class 12 studies in 2024 or earlier are not eligible to sit for the 2027 edition of the exam. While there is no prescribed age limit for candidates, they must ensure they meet the specific admission standards set by the individual colleges or courses they intend to pursue.
It is important to note that performance in JEE Main is essential even for students whose primary goal is admission to an IIT. Since JEE Main acts as the qualifying test for JEE Advanced, students must secure a score above the established cutoff to proceed to the next stage. The NTA releases these cutoff percentiles following the conclusion of the April session. Candidates should also be aware that while JEE Main scores are used for admissions into NITs, IIITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs), qualifying for the JEE Advanced exam is a separate and necessary requirement for IIT admissions. Participating in both the January and April sessions of JEE Main can provide students with significant examination experience and multiple opportunities to improve their performance.
