Nagpur is set to welcome the 10th campus of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU), further cementing its status as a hub for higher education in India. Already home to esteemed institutions like AIIMS, IIM, IIIT, and VNIT, the addition of NFSU will enhance the city’s academic landscape. The new campus, specializing in forensic sciences and allied fields, will be established on a 50-acre site at Mouza Chincholi in Kamptee. It will be Maharashtra’s second NFSU campus, following the one in Pune. The Maharashtra government has approved the land for the project, and preparations for a temporary campus are underway. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari mentioned that the site had undergone two inspections, and Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar had been requested to expedite the transfer. Bidari indicated that while the permanent campus construction would take approximately two years, classes are scheduled to begin this June at a temporary location. To facilitate this, Nagpur University (NU) has offered premises near Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). The temporary site, which currently houses the Bharosa Cell, will provide two vacant floors to NFSU for an initial period of two years. The university's inaugural academic session is set to launch with three undergraduate programs—Forensic Science, Cyber Security, and Cyber Forensics—and a total intake of 180 students. Postgraduate programs, including MSc courses, will also be introduced to meet the increasing demand in these specialized areas. NU Vice-Chancellor Prashant Bokare shared that formal proposals from NFSU were awaited and would be reviewed during the university’s management council meeting on January 22. Bokare also proposed demolishing an existing dilapidated structure at the temporary site to construct a vertical facility, addressing future requirements of institutions like NFSU in the city. Bidari noted that the NFSU campus would be the first of its kind in central India, providing high-end courses in forensic sciences. Graduates are expected to find excellent opportunities, both domestically and internationally, particularly in fields like cyber and digital forensics, which are in high demand globally. Established in 2009 in Gujarat under the leadership of then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, NFSU has grown into a globally recognized institution for forensic education, with campuses in India and abroad, including Uganda. The establishment of NFSU in Nagpur is anticipated to provide world-class educational opportunities and strengthen the region’s academic environment, enabling students in central India to access cutting-edge programs and pursue careers in emerging fields.
