What are IISERs?

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) are top government institutes in India, set up to promote high-quality education and research in basic sciences. These institutes were created by the Ministry of Education to encourage young minds to pursue science and research from the undergraduate level itself.
The IISERs were officially established by the Parliament of India through the Science Education and Research (Amendment) Act in 2010. Today, there are seven IISERs across the country — located in Pune (Maharashtra), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Mohali (Punjab), Kolkata (West Bengal), Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), and Berhampur (Odisha).
In 2012, all IISERs were given the status of 'Institutes of National Importance' by the Indian government, putting them in the same league as top institutes like IISc Bangalore. The government has invested nearly ₹500 crore in each IISER during their initial years to ensure they become centers of excellence in science and research.
