Following the conclusion of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) 2026 counselling, both Jadavpur University and Calcutta University have reported a significant increase in vacant seats compared to previous years. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) is expected to conduct an online decentralised counselling process to address these vacancies. This development raises questions about the factors contributing to the higher number of unfilled positions in these prestigious institutions.

Jadavpur University has revealed that out of 1,190 engineering seats, 378 remain unfilled, marking a notable rise from previous years when the number of vacant seats typically ranged between 150 and 180. Among the popular engineering disciplines, the Computer Science and Engineering department has 20 vacant seats, while the Electrical Engineering department has approximately 50. This trend indicates a shift in student preferences and choices during the counselling process.

Calcutta University has also reported a total of 168 vacant seats following the third round of WBJEE counselling, a stark contrast to the 20 to 30 vacant seats observed in previous years. Faculty members from both universities attribute this increase to the introduction of fresh registration and choice filling for each round of counselling, which allowed students to forgo their allotted seats in hopes of securing better options in subsequent rounds.

The official notification regarding the WBJEE 2026 decentralised counselling has further encouraged students to leave their assigned seats for the possibility of admission to other institutions. WBJEEB has confirmed that all vacant seats will be made available through this online process, although details regarding the number of seats and participating colleges are yet to be announced.

As the situation develops, more information about the decentralised counselling process is anticipated soon. Students and stakeholders are advised to stay informed about the latest updates regarding admissions, including exam results, schedules, and other educational news, as the academic landscape continues to evolve in West Bengal.
