Founded in 1961, IIM Ahmedabad, also known as IIMA, is a public business school situated in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. The institute has been designated as an ‘Institute of National Importance' by the MHRD, Government of India. History of IIM Ahmedabad:
- Prior to the establishment of IIM Ahmedabad, there was a significant need in India for an autonomous management institute to train new graduates.
- In 1961, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta were established in collaboration with their international partners, HBS and MIT.
- IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta initially focused on executive development programs and a flagship course.
- In 1964, a 2-year PG degree in Business Administration was introduced as the flagship program.
- During his visit to India in 1962, Louis Kahn initiated his project for IIMA, with the faculty house being the first structure built on campus, followed by the dormitories/student hostels.
- Notably, the batch of 1964-65 was the inaugural group of students. Before relocating to the main campus in 1966, classes were held in a room at ATIRA, and this batch resided in an apartment provided by the Gujarat Housing Board.
