- The history of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur dates back to 1946 when a committee was established by Sir Jogendra Singh (Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council) to oversee the creation of new higher technical institutions for the post-World War II development of the country.
- A 22-member committee, led by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, was formed to propose the establishment of major institutions in the four regions of India, modeled after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
- The report recommended that these institutes be established as soon as possible, with those in the East and West of India to be initiated immediately.
- Following the committee's recommendations, the first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in Esplanade East, Calcutta, as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute in May 1950.
- In September 1950, it relocated to its permanent campus at Hilji, Kharagpur. The institute was renamed the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) on August 18, 1951, prior to its official inauguration.
