About IMU Chennai

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) was founded as a Central University via an Act of Parliament (Act 22) in November 2008, under the auspices of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It functions as a teaching and affiliating University, with its main campus located in Chennai and six regional campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam. Additionally, it has 18 affiliated institutes. The University is part of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), an organization committed to promoting global Maritime excellence. IMU provides a diverse array of courses in Maritime Studies, culminating in the award of UG, PG, and PhD degrees across various disciplines. These programs are offered through its four schools: the School of Maritime Management, the School of Marine Engineering & Technology, the School of Nautical Sciences, and the School of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering. Admission to all programs is conducted through IMU CET, followed by a counseling process. The University allocates seats for special states, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, eight northeastern states (including Sikkim), and Jammu & Kashmir. Prior to the establishment of IMU, there were seven esteemed teaching and research institutes under the Ministry of Shipping.
