About IMI Noida Admission Process

All pre-sea courses provided by IMI are officially sanctioned by the Directorate General of Shipping. The BTech program is also recognized by the AICTE and is affiliated with the Indian Maritime University. Admission to all pre-sea courses is contingent upon a candidate's performance in the relevant entrance examination. Additionally, candidates must satisfy the age criteria and medical standards established by the Institute. IMI has a team of qualified doctors and specialized laboratories that adhere to Merchant Navy regulations and requirements as outlined by ILO Convention 147 Seafarer’s Medical Examination. All candidates are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination and mandatory tests prior to enrollment.

Qualifying exam: OPEN-NET examination conducted by IMU

Eligibility: Class 12 (‘A’ levels) with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or BSc graduates with 60% aggregate in the final year. Minimum 50% aggregate in English in Class 10 or 12 is a must. Fluency in written and spoken English required
Age limit: Maximum 25 years on the date of training commencement
Medical requirement: Medically fit with eyesight 6/6 without external aids. No colour blindness

1 year
BTech (Marine)

Qualifying exam: IMUCET

Eligibility: Class 12 (‘A’ levels) with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or BSc graduates with 60% aggregate in the final year. Minimum 50% aggregate in English in Class 10 or 12 is a must. Fluency in written and spoken English required
Age limit: Maximum 25 years on the date of training commencement
Medical requirement: Medically fit with eyesight 6/6 with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness

Graduate in Mechanical Engineering (GME)

Qualifying exam: Tests and interview conducted by IMI

Eligibility: BE/ BTech in Mechanical or Naval Architecture from AICTE-approved college/university with minimum 50% aggregate overall and 60% in English in either Class 10 or 12. Fluency in written and spoken English is expected. Direct sponsorship by shipping companies is also accepted
Age limit: Maximum 28 years on the date of training commencement
Medical requirement: Medically fit with eyesight 6/6 with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness


1 year
Electro-Technical Officers (ETO)

Any one of the following qualifications:

- Class 12 in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English with a minimum of 50% aggregate in English at Class 10 or 12 level

- Three-year diploma with minimum 60% aggregate or four-year degree in Electrical Engineering/ Electronics Engineering/ Electrical and Electronics Engineering/ Electronics and Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering/ Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent with minimum 50% aggregate (including lateral entry) recognised by any state or Central Government or the AICTE
Age limit: Maximum 35 years on the date of training commencement
Medical requirement: Medical fitness certificate from a DG Shipping-approved doctor as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping Rules, 2000 (as amended)

4 months followed by 6 months onboard training

IMI also offers lateral entry admission to the BTech program. To qualify, a candidate must have completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering/Marine Engineering from any government-recognized institution with a minimum aggregate of 60%. The diploma should have been obtained within the designated timeframe of three years. Candidates must also have achieved at least 50% aggregate in English at the Class 10/Class 12/diploma level. The maximum age for application is 25 years, and eyesight must comply with DG Shipping medical standards.
