Among the top-tier national law schools in India, established based on the five-year law degree framework proposed and implemented by the Bar Council of India (BCI), The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS, commonly referred to as NUJS) was founded under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999). The University received notification under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2004 and was granted permanent affiliation by the Bar Council of India in July 2005. It stands as one of the autonomous law schools in India. NUJS, Kolkata, along with GNLU and NLSIU, Bengaluru, remains one of the only three National Law Schools that have the esteemed “Chief Justice of India” serving as the Chancellor.
NUJS is a Public Law School and a National University, providing programs such as BA-LLB (Hons), BSc-LLB (Hons), LLM (Corporate and Commercial Law), M Phil, PhD, and LLD. Additionally, the University offers Diploma and PG Diploma courses in various specializations.
