The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has officially announced a major restructuring of the VITEEE 2027 examination pattern. In a significant shift from previous years, the total duration of the computer-based test has been reduced to two hours, or 120 minutes. Alongside this reduction in time, the institution has introduced mandatory sectional timers, a move designed to test the speed and time-management capabilities of B.Tech aspirants.

The upcoming entrance examination is scheduled to take place between April 27 and May 2, 2027. Students planning to appear for the test must adjust their preparation strategies to accommodate these changes, as the new format restricts the ability to navigate freely between subjects during the examination. Under the updated structure, each section is locked to a specific time limit, and once that period expires, the system will automatically save and submit the responses for that section, preventing any further access to those questions.

Breakdown of the Revised VITEEE 2027 Exam Structure

The revised examination format now consists of a total of 100 questions, carrying a maximum of 400 marks. The marking scheme remains consistent with previous standards, awarding four marks for each correct answer while imposing a penalty of one mark for every incorrect response. The question paper will continue to be administered in English.

The distribution of questions and the newly implemented time limits are as follows: Mathematics is allocated 40 questions worth 160 marks with a 50-minute limit. Physics and Chemistry each consist of 25 questions worth 100 marks, with 30 minutes allotted for each subject. Finally, the English and Aptitude sections each contain 5 questions worth 20 marks, with a combined time limit of 10 minutes for these two segments.

Impact on Candidate Preparation Strategy

The introduction of fixed sectional timers represents a departure from the previous shared-window approach, where candidates had more flexibility in how they allocated their time across the entire paper. With the new constraints, students are advised to focus on rigorous practice using section-specific timers to build the necessary speed and accuracy required for the exam.

Given the reduced time per section, experts suggest that candidates should prioritize solving conceptual and straightforward questions first to maximize their scores. Because the system closes access to a section once its timer expires, students are cautioned against spending excessive time on difficult problems, as this could lead to missed opportunities in other areas. Furthermore, the presence of negative marking necessitates a strategic approach to avoid blind guesswork, which could adversely affect a candidate's overall rank. Aspirants are encouraged to utilize mock tests that simulate these new time-bound conditions to ensure they are fully prepared for the exam environment.
