The number of candidates registered for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 has reached approximately 2.84 lakh. This figure marks the second consecutive year of decline in participation for the entrance examination, which serves as the primary gateway for admission into 22 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and over 1,700 other business schools across the country.
The current registration count represents a notable shift from the record-breaking numbers observed in recent years. Data indicates that the total number of applicants has fallen by roughly 13.7 percent when compared to the peak of 3.29 lakh registrations recorded in 2024. Following that high point, the number of applicants dipped to 2.95 lakh in 2025 before reaching the current level of 2.84 lakh for the 2026 cycle.
IIM Indore, the conducting body for this year's examination, has confirmed that the CAT 2026 will take place on November 29. While the registration phase has concluded, the next significant milestone for applicants is the release of the official admit cards.
Candidates who have successfully completed their registration process will be able to download their admit cards starting November 4. These documents will be made available on the official website at iimcat.ac.in. The admit card is a mandatory document for entry into the examination hall and will contain essential details, including the assigned test centre and the specific exam slot for each candidate. Authorities have advised students to monitor the official portal for the release and to ensure they carry the printed admit card to their designated test centre on the day of the examination.
