The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced that the registration window for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, which does not require a late fee, will officially close on October 5, 2026. This deadline follows a recent extension granted by the institute to accommodate candidates who encountered difficulties during the DigiLocker verification process.
While the window for regular fee payments concludes on October 5, applicants who miss this cutoff will still have the opportunity to submit their forms by paying an additional late fee. The registration portal will remain accessible for late applications until October 12, 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to complete their submissions through the official website at gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
A critical component of the GATE 2027 application process is the correct uploading of photographs and signatures. To assist candidates who may be struggling with document formatting, IIT Madras has provided specific technical requirements. Applicants are advised to use reliable image compression tools to ensure their files meet the necessary dimensions and resolution standards before attempting to upload them to the portal.
For photographs, the image must be recent, in color, and set against a white background. The dimensions must be 3.5 cm in width by 4.5 cm in height, with the candidate's face occupying 30% to 35% of the frame. The file must be in JPEG or JPG format, with a maximum size of 600 KB. Furthermore, the image resolution should fall between a minimum of 200 x 260 pixels and a maximum of 530 x 690 pixels. Candidates are reminded that the face must be clearly visible and free from obstructions such as sunglasses, spectacles, or caps.
Regarding the signature, it must be executed in black or dark blue ink. The uploaded file must also be in JPEG or JPG format, with a maximum file size of 300 KB. The signature should cover 70% to 80% of the allocated space, with a resolution ranging from 250 x 80 pixels to 580 x 180 pixels. The aspect ratio for the signature must be between 2.75 and 3.75. It is essential that the signature is performed by the candidate personally, as any discrepancies during the examination process could lead to disqualification.
Candidates should ensure all details are verified before finalizing their application. Following the October 5 deadline for regular registration, the portal will transition to the late-fee payment phase, which remains open until October 12, 2026.
