Securing a seat at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) remains one of the most challenging milestones for management aspirants globally. Recent data obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) request has shed light on the intense competition for the institute's flagship two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) for the 2025-27 batch, highlighting a selection rate that underscores the limited availability of seats relative to the massive national applicant pool.

According to the official figures, approximately 2.69 lakh candidates appeared for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2024, vying for spots at premier business schools across the country. Out of this total pool, IIM Ahmedabad extended 509 admission offers. Of those offered a seat, 414 candidates ultimately enrolled in the program. This results in an offer rate of approximately 0.19 per cent, a figure that reflects the rigorous screening process required to gain entry into the institution.

Understanding the Selection and Shortlisting Criteria

The path to admission at IIM Ahmedabad extends well beyond a high score in the CAT examination. The institute employs a multi-faceted selection policy designed to evaluate candidates holistically. For the 2025-27 batch, the initial shortlisting process relied on a formula comprising 65 per cent weightage for the CAT score and 35 per cent for the Application Rating (AR). This AR score is calculated based on a candidate's academic performance in Class 10 and Class 12, graduation marks, work experience, and gender diversity, with non-male candidates receiving additional diversity points.

To ensure fairness across diverse educational backgrounds, the institute grades applicants across 20 distinct academic streams. This structure prevents the selection process from being skewed in favor of any single field of study. Furthermore, the final selection following the interview round is determined by a comprehensive evaluation that balances the CAT performance with academic history, professional experience, and personal interview assessments. This ensures that the final cohort is composed of individuals who demonstrate excellence across various metrics rather than relying solely on entrance test results.

Future Admissions and Institutional Context

While the data provides a clear picture of the 2025-27 cycle, the institute has already established the framework for upcoming admissions. The admission policy for the 2027-29 batch will continue to utilize the CAT 2026 examination as the primary screening condition. The RTI data also noted that among the 509 candidates who received offers, 95 did not join the institute. These candidates either opted for deferred admissions or chose to enroll in other business schools, illustrating the high mobility of top-tier management aspirants.

The comparison between IIM Ahmedabad and international business schools often highlights the unique challenges of the Indian education landscape, where a high volume of applicants competes for a limited number of seats. As the institution prepares for future cycles, the emphasis remains on a structured, merit-based selection process that accounts for both academic rigor and diverse professional backgrounds.
