The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially revised the application schedule for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Prospective candidates who have yet to complete their registration now have additional time to submit their applications through the official portal at gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

According to the updated notification, the deadline for submitting applications without incurring late fees has been pushed to October 5, 2026. For those who miss this initial window, the registration portal will remain open until October 12, 2026, albeit with the inclusion of late fees. Candidates are advised to finalise their submissions well before these revised dates to avoid any last-minute technical complications.

Preparation Strategies and Exam Tools

With the registration timeline extended, students are encouraged to shift their focus toward structured preparation. Educators suggest that candidates who have already completed their registration should prioritise mastering core concepts before attempting previous year’s questions (PYQs). A common pitfall for many aspirants is jumping directly into past papers without a solid grasp of fundamental topics, which can often lead to confusion rather than clarity.

A critical component of the GATE examination is the use of the virtual calculator, which differs significantly from standard physical calculators. Because the exam interface relies on a specific reverse input method, familiarity with the digital tool is essential for maintaining accuracy during the test. The virtual calculator includes standard scientific functions such as logarithms, trigonometric operations, and square roots, all of which must be accessed via mouse clicks rather than physical keyboard inputs.

Furthermore, the virtual interface is designed to automatically adhere to the BODMAS rule and standard algebraic structures, ensuring that operations like multiplication and division are prioritised over addition and subtraction. The tool also features memory functions, including M+, M-, MR, and MC, allowing students to store and recall intermediate values during complex calculations. By practising with this specific digital interface, candidates can improve their speed and precision, ensuring they are well-prepared for the actual examination environment.
