SBI PO 2026 Selection Process: How Final Merit List is Calculated

As candidates await the announcement of the State Bank of India (SBI) Probationary Officer (PO) Mains results for the 2026 recruitment cycle, many are seeking clarity on how their final selection score is determined. According to the official recruitment notification, the Preliminary Examination serves strictly as a screening stage. Consequently, marks obtained in the Prelims are not factored into the final merit list used for appointment.

The recruitment process for the position of Probationary Officer is structured across three distinct phases. While the Preliminary Examination is essential for shortlisting candidates for the subsequent stage, the final ranking is derived exclusively from performance in the Main Examination and Phase III, which includes the Psychometric Test, Group Exercise, and Personal Interview.

Understanding the Final Merit Calculation and Selection Formula

For the 2026 recruitment, the State Bank of India employs a specific normalization process to ensure fairness in the final merit calculation. The Main Examination, which consists of both objective and descriptive tests, carries a total of 230 marks. These marks are normalized to a weightage of 75 for the purpose of the final merit list. Similarly, Phase III, which includes the Group Exercise (20 marks) and the Personal Interview (30 marks), carries a total of 50 marks, which is then normalized to a weightage of 25.

The final merit score is determined by aggregating these two normalized values, resulting in a total score out of 100. The official formula used by the bank is: Final Merit Score equals the Mains marks (normalized to 75) plus the Phase III marks (normalized to 25). Candidates must qualify in both Phase II and Phase III independently to be considered for the final selection.

Regarding the examination structure, there are no sectional cut-offs for either the Preliminary or the Main examinations. Candidates are only required to meet the overall cut-off marks prescribed for their respective categories to advance to the next stage. As the process moves forward, the results for the Mains examination will be released in a PDF format, listing the roll numbers of the successful candidates. Following this, the final selection will be made based on the merit ranking achieved through the combined scores of the Mains and Phase III assessments.
