Ladakh Overhauls Medical Admission Process for MBBS and BDS Seats

The Union Territory administration of Ladakh has officially announced a significant restructuring of its medical and dental admission policies. Following approval from Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, the Health and Medical Education Department has introduced updated guidelines for the allocation of central pool MBBS and BDS seats. This policy shift follows the recent administrative reorganization that saw the creation of seven new districts within the Union Territory.

The most notable change in the new framework is the transition away from the previous category-wise roster system. Historically, the admission process utilized a complex structure that segmented candidates based on residential districts, such as Leh and Kargil, as well as gender and specific reservation statuses. Under the revised regulations, these separate pathways have been discontinued in favor of a unified, merit-based selection process designed to enhance transparency and equity for all applicants.

New Merit-Based Selection and Seat Allocation

Under the updated guidelines, the administration will now generate a single, comprehensive Ladakh NEET merit list. This list will serve as the primary instrument for determining seat allocation for all future medical and dental admissions. By moving to a centralized merit system, the authorities aim to streamline the process and ensure that seat distribution is strictly aligned with the performance of candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The final allocation of medical seats will be determined by a candidate's NEET rank. As part of the new procedure, students will be required to participate in a choice-filling process, where they can indicate their preferred medical and dental colleges. This shift is intended to provide a more straightforward and standardized experience for students seeking admission to medical programs through the central pool.

Central Pool Seat Availability

For the upcoming academic session, the Central government has allocated a total of nine medical seats to the Union Territory of Ladakh. This quota consists of seven MBBS seats and two BDS seats, which are distributed across various participating institutions throughout India. The administration has confirmed that these seats will be filled according to the newly established merit-based criteria. Students and stakeholders are advised to monitor official communications from the Health and Medical Education Department for further updates regarding the implementation of these guidelines for the 2026 academic cycle.
