Education Ministry Considers Conducting NEET and CUET Twice a Year

The Ministry of Education is currently exploring a significant shift in the national examination landscape, with plans to conduct major entrance tests, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), twice a year. This proposal is part of a broader draft initiative aimed at modernizing the education system and providing students with greater flexibility in their academic pursuits.

By increasing the frequency of these high-stakes examinations, the government aims to mirror the structure currently utilized for the IIT-JEE. This move is intended to alleviate the immense pressure students face when preparing for a single annual attempt, offering them a second chance within the same academic cycle to improve their scores and secure admission to their preferred institutions.

Focus on Reducing Coaching Dependency and Enhancing School Support

A core objective of this proposed policy is to reduce the heavy reliance on private coaching institutes. The Ministry’s draft includes provisions for specialized training programs for school teachers, designed to equip them with the skills necessary to prepare students for competitive and entrance examinations directly within the classroom environment.

By strengthening the quality of preparation provided at the school level, officials hope to create a more equitable system where students do not feel compelled to seek external tutoring. This integrated approach is expected to foster a more supportive learning atmosphere, allowing students to balance their regular curriculum with the requirements of competitive testing more effectively.

Understanding Current Examination Frameworks

Currently, examinations such as NEET-UG and CUET-UG are held once annually. Regarding the CUET-UG structure, each subject paper consists of 50 questions, with a maximum of 250 marks per subject. Candidates are permitted to select up to five subjects, and for each correct answer, students are awarded five marks. The total marks for the examination vary based on the number of subjects chosen by the candidate.

While NCERT textbooks remain the primary resource for domain-specific preparation, the use of mock tests and previous year question banks is widely encouraged to help students familiarize themselves with the exam pattern and syllabus. As the Ministry continues to refine these proposals, students and stakeholders are awaiting an official announcement regarding the implementation timeline and the final procedural details of these potential changes.
