Ministry of Education Proposes Conducting NEET and CUET Twice Annually

The Ministry of Education is currently evaluating a significant reform to the national entrance examination landscape, with a proposal to conduct major tests like NEET and CUET twice a year. This shift aims to align these examinations with the current model used for JEE Main, providing students with multiple opportunities to perform well and alleviating the intense pressure associated with a single annual attempt.

The recommendation stems from a draft prepared by a nine-member committee tasked with reviewing the existing examination framework. By offering more than one window for these high-stakes tests, the government hopes to provide students with greater flexibility and reduce the necessity of waiting an entire year if they miss their target score during the first attempt.

Proposed Reforms to Exam Difficulty and Syllabus

Beyond the frequency of the exams, the committee has proposed a comprehensive review of the difficulty level of questions. There are concerns that some current examination questions exceed the standard expected at the Class 12 level. The proposed reforms aim to recalibrate the difficulty to ensure it remains within the grasp of students who have completed their secondary education, thereby creating a more equitable testing environment.

The draft also addresses the need for a more inclusive syllabus. Currently, there is a push to ensure that entrance examinations are not strictly confined to the NCERT curriculum. Instead, the proposal suggests incorporating elements from the diverse curricula followed by various state boards. This change is intended to provide a level playing field for students from different educational backgrounds, ensuring that no specific group is disadvantaged by the content of the examination.

Strengthening School-Level Preparation

A central objective of these proposed changes is to reduce the widespread dependence on private coaching centers, which has become a significant burden for many families. The Ministry of Education intends to address this by strengthening academic preparation directly within the school system. This includes a proposal to provide specialized training for school teachers, equipping them with the skills necessary to guide students effectively for competitive and entrance examinations.

While these measures represent a significant shift in education policy, it is important to note that the proposal is currently in the draft stage. The implementation of these changes is subject to the government’s formal approval process. As of now, NEET and CUET remain single-attempt examinations, and any transition to a twice-yearly format will only occur following official confirmation from the relevant authorities.
