The release of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 Management rankings has sparked interest among MBA aspirants, revealing a nuanced performance landscape between India's top business schools. While the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad maintained its position as the top-ranked management institute in the country, IIM Bangalore distinguished itself by becoming the only institution to achieve a perfect score of 100 out of 100 in the perception category.

For students preparing for competitive entrance exams like the CAT, these rankings offer more than just a top-level summary. By examining the specific metrics used by the Ministry of Education, candidates can better understand the strengths of various institutions, ranging from academic resources to industry reputation and research output.

Understanding the NIRF Ranking Parameters

The NIRF evaluation for management institutions is based on five distinct pillars, each carrying a specific weightage. These include Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and the Perception (PR) parameter. While metrics such as TLR and RPC rely on verifiable data—including faculty-student ratios, research publications, and median salary figures—the perception score is derived from external feedback.

The perception parameter, which accounts for 10 percent of the total score, is determined through a comprehensive survey of industry professionals, employers from reputable organizations, and academic peers. A perfect score in this area indicates that IIM Bangalore holds significant prestige and recognition within the professional and academic communities, serving as a key indicator of the institution's external standing.

Why IIM Ahmedabad Retained the Top Rank

Despite IIM Bangalore’s dominance in the perception metric, IIM Ahmedabad secured the overall number one rank due to its performance in high-weightage categories. The NIRF methodology assigns a 30 percent weightage to both Teaching, Learning & Resources and Research and Professional Practice. In these critical areas, IIM Ahmedabad outperformed its peer, recording a score of 91.84 in TLR compared to IIM Bangalore’s 89.16, and 64.92 in RPC against IIM Bangalore’s 59.04.

Ultimately, these figures resulted in an overall score of 83.29 for IIM Ahmedabad, placing it ahead of IIM Bangalore, which finished with an overall score of 81.56. Education experts advise that while perception is a valuable indicator of institutional reputation, it should not be the sole factor for students. Aspirants are encouraged to look beyond the composite ranking and analyze individual parameters—such as faculty strength, research output, and graduation outcomes—to determine which business school best aligns with their specific career goals and academic priorities.
