The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 has officially concluded its registration phase, with 2.84 lakh candidates signing up for the upcoming management entrance examination. This figure represents a 3.7 per cent decrease compared to the 2.95 lakh registrations recorded in 2025. The examination is scheduled to be held on November 29, 2026, under the coordination of IIM Indore.

While the registration count provides a baseline for participation, historical data suggests that the actual number of test-takers is typically lower. Based on past attendance trends, which generally hover between 87 per cent and 89 per cent, experts estimate that between 2.48 lakh and 2.53 lakh candidates will likely sit for the exam. This anticipated turnout reflects a consistent pattern seen in previous years, where a portion of registered applicants opt out due to shifting career plans, exam date clashes, or personal preparation levels.

Exam Logistics and Admission Context

IIM Indore will conduct the CAT 2026 across three distinct exam slots on the day of the test. To facilitate the examination process, the official admit cards for all registered candidates are scheduled to be released on November 4. It is mandatory for students to carry their admit cards to the examination centre to gain entry.

The competition for the 2027-29 academic batch remains significant, with 22 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) offering a combined intake of over 8,200 seats. Based on the projected attendance figures, the ratio of candidates to available seats is estimated to be approximately 30 to 31 applicants per seat. However, this figure is a broad estimate, as the final admission process at each IIM is multifaceted. Selection criteria are determined by individual institutes and incorporate a variety of factors, including CAT percentile scores, past academic performance, relevant work experience, and performance during personal interviews.

Staying Updated for Exam Day

Candidates are advised to monitor the official CAT website, iimcat.ac.in, for all verified updates regarding the examination. The portal serves as the primary source for admit card downloads, specific exam-day instructions, and future announcements regarding results. As the November 29 date approaches, applicants should ensure they are familiar with the guidelines provided by the conducting body to ensure a smooth testing experience.
