The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially clarified the passing criteria for the 2027 Class 10 and 12 board examinations, putting an end to recent uncertainty among students and educators. The board confirmed that the requirements for passing subjects remain consistent with previous academic years, maintaining the established assessment structure.
Following a circular that sparked confusion regarding how marks are calculated, the board issued a formal clarification to ensure clarity. For Class 10 students, the passing requirement is to secure a minimum of 33 percent marks in the combined total of their internal assessments and board examinations. The board emphasized that there is no mandate to score 33 percent separately in the internal and external components for Class 10, maintaining the existing 80:20 assessment pattern.
While the Class 10 criteria focus on the combined total, the board noted a distinction for Class 12 students. Candidates appearing for the Class 12 board examinations are required to secure a minimum of 33 percent marks separately in both their internal and external assessments to be declared successful in a subject. This distinction remains a key part of the board's evaluation policy for senior secondary students.
To support students in their preparation, the CBSE has notified its affiliated schools that it will provide Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes for both Class 10 and 12. These resources are intended to help students understand the exam pattern, practice important topics, and ensure uniformity in the coverage of the curriculum. The board encourages students to utilize these materials alongside previous years' question papers to improve their time management and overall exam readiness.
The board's clarification serves to stabilize expectations for the upcoming academic cycle. As preparations for the 2027 board examinations continue, students and schools are advised to refer to the official guidelines provided by the CBSE to ensure they are fully informed about the assessment structure and subject-specific requirements. Further updates regarding the examination schedule and practical exam dates are expected to be released by the board in due course.
