DEB-ID Explained: Why Is It Required and How Students Can Create It

Students seeking to pursue higher education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or Online mode in India must complete certain admission-related formalities before enrolling in a programme. As per the University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB), students need to create a DEB-ID.

DEB-ID is a unique identification number linked to a student's admission to ODL and Online programmes covered under the UGC-DEB framework.

As the universities and programmes continue to grow in number, they are offering flexible learning options to students and young professionals. It is also important for students to understand whether a course is recognised before admission.

DEB-ID is a unique identification number that learners must create before enrolling in an ODL or Online programme. According to UGC-DEB, students cannot take admission in these programmes without a valid DEB-ID. The system is linked to the student's Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)-ID.

Students seeking admission to ODL or Online programmes need a valid DEB-ID. The requirement applies to students who want to enrol in programmes covered by the UGC's ODL and Online education framework.

At the same time, students are advised to verify whether their chosen Higher Educational Institution and specific programme are recognised or entitled by UGC-DEB before applying.

The two IDs, DEB-ID and ABC-ID, serve different purposes. The ABC-ID is associated with the Academic Bank of Credits, which facilitates the storage and management of academic credits of students at one place. On the other hand, DEB-ID is associated with a student's enrolment in ODL and Online programmes under the UGC-DEB framework.

Students are required to create an ABC-ID before they can create their DEB-ID. As per the UGC-DEB portal, an ABC-ID can be created through DigiLocker.

The process involves the following steps:

1. Create an ABC-ID.

2. Go to the official UGC-DEB portal.

3. Register using your ABC-ID.

4. Enter and verify the required details.

5. Generate the DEB-ID.

6. Use the DEB-ID while completing admission to the eligible ODL or Online programme.

Students are advised to keep their DEB-ID stored safely. If a student loses their DEB-ID, they will have to create a new DEB-ID. According to the UGC-DEB FAQ, a DEB-ID remains valid throughout a student's ODL/Online learning lifecycle, which means that students do not need have to create a new DEB-ID for every admission.

Creating a DEB-ID does not by itself confirm that a particular course is recognised. Students should check the UGC-DEB portal to verify the recognition or entitlement status of the HEI and the specific programme for the relevant academic session.

Students should also check whether the programme is prohibited in ODL or Online mode and verify that the institution is not offering the programme through a prohibited franchising arrangement.
