Captain Smit Machchhar, a pilot with Flydubai, has earned international recognition for his courageous actions during a mid-air emergency on flight FZ1073. While operating a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, the aircraft experienced a critical security incident involving the co-pilot. Reports indicate that the co-pilot attempted to crash the Boeing 737 MAX 8, causing the plane to plummet more than 14,000 feet in just 30 seconds while at an altitude of 34,000 feet.

In a display of quick thinking and resilience, Captain Machchhar engaged in a physical struggle to restrain the co-pilot while simultaneously managing to open the cockpit door and issue distress signals. His actions enabled cabin crew and off-duty Flydubai personnel on board to enter the cockpit and assist in subduing the attacker. Thanks to these efforts, the aircraft was safely diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, ensuring the safety of all 174 passengers and crew members on board.

From Textile Engineering to Aviation Excellence

Captain Machchhar’s journey to the flight deck is marked by a significant career transition. Initially, he pursued studies in textile engineering following his completion of Class 12. However, his career trajectory shifted at age 19 after attending an aviation seminar, which inspired him to relocate to New Zealand for professional pilot training. Upon his return to India, he established a distinguished career in commercial aviation.

Before joining Flydubai in June 2022 as a direct-entry captain, Machchhar spent over a decade with SpiceJet, where he served as a senior commander and line training captain. Throughout his 13-year career, he has accumulated approximately 9,750 hours of flight experience, specifically on the Boeing 737 family, including the 737-800 and 737 MAX variants. Prior to this incident, he had logged over 6,400 hours as a pilot-in-command and was actively involved in training and assessing other pilots.

Ongoing Investigation and Global Recognition

Following the incident, Captain Machchhar is reportedly receiving medical care after sustaining injuries during the altercation. While the specific circumstances surrounding the co-pilot's actions remain under investigation by the relevant authorities, the aviation community and the public have widely lauded the captain for his decisive response. His ability to maintain control of the aircraft under extreme pressure is credited with preventing a major tragedy and ensuring that all individuals on the flight returned home safely.
