GGSIPU Removes Rank-Capping Policy for Vacant Seats in 2026 Admissions

The Delhi government has announced a significant policy shift regarding admissions at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), aimed at reducing the number of unfilled seats across its affiliated institutions. Effective for the 2026 academic cycle, the university has officially removed its long-standing rank-capping policy for seats that remain vacant following the conclusion of regular counselling rounds.

Under the previous regulatory framework, GGSIPU enforced a maximum closing rank for every course, which effectively barred candidates with lower ranks from securing admission, even when seats remained unoccupied. This restrictive approach often resulted in a substantial number of seats staying empty at the end of the academic year. By eliminating this barrier, the university intends to provide a more equitable opportunity for students to access higher education and ensure that available academic resources are better utilised.

Addressing Persistent Vacancies Through Physical Counselling

The decision follows a concerning trend of high vacancy rates at the university. According to official data, more than 29,000 seats have remained unfilled over the past three academic sessions. Specifically, the 2023-24 session saw over 11,000 vacant seats, followed by 8,512 in the subsequent year and 8,725 in the 2025-26 session. The Directorate of Higher Education has confirmed that this policy change is designed to address these recurring gaps directly.

To facilitate the filling of these vacancies, GGSIPU is transitioning to a physical spot counselling model. This process, which is already utilised by other prominent Delhi-based institutions such as the Delhi Technological University (DTU), Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW), requires candidates to report in person to the designated venue. During these sessions, a daily merit list will be generated based on the candidates present, and seat allocation will occur on the spot. This shift is expected to streamline the admission process, making it more transparent and efficient for both the institution and the applicants.
