Honours vs Honours with Research: Key Differences Students Must Know Under NEP 2020

With several higher education institutions adopting the four-year undergraduate framework under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, students often come across degree titles such as Bachelor's degree with Honours and Bachelor's degree with Honours with Research.

While both are four-year undergraduate pathways, students should note that the two are not identical. The major difference is the research component attached to the Honours with Research pathway.

According to the Ministry of Education's NEP 2020 document, students completing a four-year Bachelor's programme with Research can be eligible for a one-year Master's programme, subject to the applicable higher education framework and institutional requirements.

It also states that a four-year Bachelor's degree with Research can be used as an eligibility route for PhD admission.

Under the UGC's undergraduate framework, a student completing the required four-year programme can receive a Bachelor's degree with Honours.

The UGC framework provides for a four-year undergraduate Honours degree with 160 credits. The four-year structure allows students to undertake deeper study in their major discipline along with other prescribed components of the undergraduate curriculum.

The exact programme structure can differ between universities because institutions implement the framework through their respective curricula.

An Honours degree may therefore be offered in disciplines such as arts and humanities, commerce, science, social sciences, languages and other undergraduate disciplines. Therefore, students are advised to check the programme structure of their university to understand the major, minor, elective and other credit requirements.

This programme may be suitable for students who want to pursue deeper academic study in their chosen major. Those who want to build strong subject knowledge, plan to pursue postgraduate education, work, or prefer coursework-based undergraduate study can opt for this programme.

The Honours with Research pathway has been designed for those students who seek to undertake a substantial research component during the fourth year of the undergraduate programme.

According to the UGC's Guidelines for Internship/Research Internship for Undergraduate Students, students enrolled in a four-year UG degree with Honours with Research are required to undertake a dissertation/research project/thesis/project work in the eighth semester.

It carries 12 credits and requires 360 hours of work during the eighth semester. Students are required to submit the research work to their allotted mentor, with a report and viva, as part of the evaluation.

Those who are interested in academic or research-oriented careers can opt for Honours with Research. The research component can also help students develop analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills that may be useful beyond academia. They should not choose the research pathway solely because it sounds more advanced.

Students should not assume that every university will automatically admit every Honours with Research graduate to a one-year Master's or PhD programme. The admission will be conducted based on the eligibility conditions, regulations and selection process of the institution and programme concerned.
