IIT Guwahati Launches Admissions for BSc (Hons) in Data Science & AI with Flexible Learning Options

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) has officially begun admissions for its BSc (Hons.) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for the September 2025 session. Offered through the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, this cutting-edge program is designed to prepare students for the evolving demands of the digital world while aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes multidisciplinary and flexible education.

A Program Built for Flexibility and Choice

The structure of this four-year program stands out for its multi-exit and multi-entry flexibility, allowing learners to pursue the course at their own pace. The academic calendar is divided into trimesters, with students having the option to adjust their course load or even take a temporary break while maintaining active status by paying a Program Continuation Fee of ₹5,000 per trimester. While the standard duration is four years, the program can be extended up to eight years, offering immense adaptability for learners from varied backgrounds.
The curriculum covers a wide spectrum—from foundational subjects like Basic English, Linear Algebra, and Introduction to Statistics to more advanced, specialized areas including:
  • Machine Learning Fundamentals
  • Deep Learning Essentials
  • Big Data Analytics
Students can also participate in internships, term projects, and culminate their studies with a capstone project in the final year—ensuring hands-on experience that bridges theory and application.
One of the key highlights of this program is the ability to exit at different stages with a recognized credential:
  • After Year 1: Advanced Certificate in Data Science & AI
  • After Year 2: Diploma in Data Science & AI
  • After Year 3: BSc in Data Science & AI
  • After Year 4: BSc (Hons.) in Data Science & AI
This approach ensures that students who need to pause their education can still walk away with a valued qualification.

Eligibility & Admission Process

To apply, candidates must have:
  • Completed Class 12 or equivalent with at least 60% aggregate marks
  • Mathematics as a compulsory subject
There are two admission pathways:
  1. Direct Admission: For students eligible for JEE (Advanced) in any year
  2. Entrance Test Route: Applicants who are not JEE-eligible must qualify through an online entrance exam, supported by an optional preparatory course designed to help them succeed
The application window is open from April 14 to May 30, 2025, and classes commence on September 1, 2025.

Affordable and Transparent Fee Structure

The program is designed to be accessible and affordable, with a total estimated cost of Rs 3,49,000 for the full four years. This includes:
  • Admission Fee: Rs 50,000
  • Tuition Fee: Rs 2,99,000
Fees are charged on a per-credit basis at Rs 1,000 per credit, allowing students to select a course load that fits their schedule and budget. Additional charges apply for course repetitions, if any.
To enhance practical learning and people interaction, IIT Guwahati offers an optional four-week campus immersion. This residential component allows students to experience IITG’s academic culture firsthand through hands-on training, workshops, and interaction with faculty and peers.
