The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) recently hosted an exceptional celebration of North Indian Classical music, featuring two of the most esteemed maestros—Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan on the sitar and Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar on the sarod. Accompanied by the talented Shri Ishaan Ghosh on the tabla, the event provided a captivating musical experience that deeply engaged the audience. Organized by the SPIC MACAY – IIT Kanpur Chapter in collaboration with the P. T. Narasimhan Fund for Classical Arts, the concert underscored IIT Kanpur’s commitment to cultural enrichment and artistic appreciation within its academic environment. The evening commenced with Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar’s performance of Raga Megh-Malati, a rare and evocative composition created by his guru, the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. His rendition reflected effortless mastery and profound emotional depth. This was followed by a dhun based on Raga Tilak Kamod, where his nuanced expression and technical precision captivated listeners. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan then took the stage, presenting a mesmerizing performance of Raga Charukeshi. His interpretation showcased the Imdadkhani Gharana’s distinctive gayaki ang—a vocal-inspired style that enhances the sitar’s lyrical quality. His performance, characterized by intricate phrasing, melodic exploration, and technical brilliance, served as a masterclass in classical music. The evening concluded with a deeply moving dhun in Raga Bhairavi, leaving the audience in awe.
