The latest edition of IIT Kanpur's flagship annual startup festival, Abhivyakti, began recently, focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation. The event commenced on Friday, January 17, with a day filled with meaningful discussions, product launches, and collaborative initiatives. It brought together leaders, industry professionals, academicians, and students to explore the potential of innovation in driving India's progress.
The opening ceremony emphasized the importance of creativity and problem-solving in establishing India as a global leader. Professor Manindra Agrawal, the director of IIT Kanpur, remarked on the institution's commitment to innovation and its transformative role in shaping the nation's future. During the event, IIT Kanpur introduced a Phase Change Material-Based Thermal Management System developed by Professor Sri Sivakumar. This energy-efficient innovation enhances cold chain logistics by providing superior thermal conductivity and energy storage, making it suitable for applications such as ice cream storage and food preservation. The official launch of this product was marked by Prof. Agrawal, who also contributed to the local community by donating two ice cream carts equipped with this system to support small businesses and promote energy-efficient practices.
Another highlight was the presentation of a Rs. 5 crore corpus letter by Sudatta Mandal, Deputy Managing Director of SIDBI Bank, to Professor Agrawal. This funding aims to foster defence-focused startups, reflecting the growing significance of entrepreneurship and innovation within India's defence sector.
Startups backed by IIT Kanpur's Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) also showcased innovative solutions across various industries, with guests engaging with these teams and exploring their products. Additionally, the launch of new cohorts for the Centre of Excellence in Drones, MedTech, and AI/ML reinforced the institute's leading role in research and technological advancements.
Panel discussions served as a key feature of the day, with experts addressing topics such as strategies for establishing India as a tech leader, protecting critical infrastructure, and navigating the ethical challenges of AI/ML. These conversations offered practical insights into scaling technological solutions while promoting responsible innovation.
