MBA aspirants appearing for management entrance examinations often wonder whether taking one test is enough to apply to several business schools. The answer is yes, in many cases. However, using one entrance exam score for multiple colleges does not necessarily mean submitting only one application or paying a single fee.
Examinations such as the Common Admission Test (CAT), Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT), NMAT by GMAC, Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP) and Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) are accepted by multiple institutions. The colleges and programmes accepting each score, however, have their own eligibility requirements, application deadlines and selection procedures.
How Does One Exam Score Work For Multiple Colleges?
A common entrance examination allows candidates to use their score when applying to different participating institutions, subject to each college's admission rules. Candidates do not ordinarily need to take the same examination again for every college that accepts its score.
For instance, CAT scores are used by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and several other management institutes. However, candidates seeking admission to non-IIM colleges generally need to check each institution's application process separately. IIMs also follow their respective shortlisting and selection criteria.
The same principle applies to other examinations, although the application process varies. According to the official CMAT website, candidates must apply separately to their preferred participating institutions, which announce their own cut-offs and selection procedures.
Similarly, the official XAT 2027 website states that registering for the examination does not automatically make a candidate eligible for every XLRI programme. Candidates must apply separately for the XLRI programmes they wish to pursue, while other participating institutes may have their own application requirements.
Do Candidates Need To Fill Separate College Applications?
In most cases, yes. Registering for an entrance examination and applying for admission to a business school are two distinct steps.
Candidates should check whether their preferred college requires a separate application, whether the application is integrated with the entrance-test registration portal, and whether individual programmes have separate deadlines or fees.
SNAP offers a clear example. Its official website lists a test registration fee of Rs 2,550 per attempt and a separate programme registration fee of Rs 1,000 for each programme, with applicable taxes extra. Paying only the test fee does not complete the application for a chosen programme
