The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has unveiled two significant digital initiatives designed to support students preparing for competitive examinations. The launch includes a dedicated free online preparation platform for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM), as well as the introduction of an AI-powered academic assistant known as the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor.

These resources were officially inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, during the institute's Platinum Jubilee celebrations held at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata. The initiatives are part of a broader effort to democratise access to high-quality educational materials and reduce the financial burden often associated with private coaching for national-level entrance exams.

Expanding Access to Competitive Exam Preparation

The new online platform for GATE and JAM leverages the academic expertise and digital infrastructure of IIT Kharagpur to provide comprehensive study support. By offering these resources free of charge, the institute aims to assist a diverse range of candidates, particularly those from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds who may otherwise face barriers to accessing premium coaching services.

GATE is a critical examination for students seeking admission to postgraduate engineering programmes and is also utilised for various professional recruitment opportunities. Similarly, JAM serves as the primary gateway for students pursuing postgraduate science degrees at participating institutions. By providing structured preparation materials, IIT Kharagpur intends to help students improve their readiness for these competitive assessments through institutional-grade resources.

AI-Powered Learning Support

Complementing the exam preparation platform is the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor, developed in collaboration with Fermi AI and integrated into the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). Unlike conventional AI tools that primarily focus on delivering direct answers, this tutor is specifically engineered to foster independent problem-solving skills. It guides students through complex concepts by providing hints and contextual explanations rather than simply supplying solutions.

The platform also features a 'Scan & Ask' functionality, which allows students to seek assistance with academic queries in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. This tool is designed to help learners identify errors in their work and gain a deeper understanding of challenging topics. The National Digital Library of India, which supports this initiative, is backed by the Union Ministry of Education and currently serves over one crore learners with a repository of more than 130 million educational resources.
