IIT Roorkee Invites Applications for Spring Semester PhD Programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has officially commenced the admission process for its PhD programmes for the Spring Semester. Prospective research scholars looking to pursue doctoral studies at the institute’s Roorkee and Saharanpur campuses are invited to submit their applications through the official online portal.

The institute has set October 20, 2026, as the final deadline for submitting online applications. Following the application phase, the selection process, which will include written tests and interviews, is tentatively scheduled to take place between November 16 and November 21, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will receive specific details regarding their individual schedules directly from the relevant department, centre, or school.

Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must complete the entire application process digitally, as the institute will not accept physical copies or hard-copy submissions. Applicants are required to register on the official admission portal, fill out the necessary details, and pay the application fee online. It is recommended that candidates download and retain a copy of their submitted form for future reference. The application fee is set at INR 500 for General, GEN-EWS, and OBC-NCL candidates, while SC, ST, and PwD applicants are required to pay INR 250.

Regarding academic eligibility, candidates holding a master's degree are generally expected to have secured at least 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 55% marks or a CGPA of 5.50. Furthermore, applicants with a four-year bachelor's degree must possess at least 75% marks or a CGPA of 7.50. In addition to these academic benchmarks, candidates may be required to have qualified for relevant national-level examinations or fellowships. Notably, students holding degrees from IITs with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher may be eligible for an exemption from the national-level examination requirement, provided they meet specific institutional conditions.

IIT Roorkee offers a diverse range of PhD specialisations across various fields, including Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Management Studies, Architecture and Planning, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Earth Sciences. The institute also provides research opportunities in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, nanotechnology, quantum communication, sustainable energy, disaster management, transportation systems, and space science.

The selection process is merit-based. The institute has clarified that meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee an automatic invitation to the written test or interview stage. Applicants are advised to verify all provided information thoroughly before final submission to ensure their candidacy is processed correctly.
