The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT CET), a critical gateway for students seeking admission into engineering and pharmacy programs across the state, is currently the subject of discussion regarding its examination format. While recent reports indicate that various stakeholders, including parents and admission counsellors, have formally requested a transition from the existing computer-based test (CBT) to an offline, pen-and-paper mode, no such changes have been officially adopted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell).

The demand for this shift, which also includes a proposal to hold both examination attempts on a single day for all candidates, emerged during a recent protest in Mumbai. Despite these calls for reform, the CET Cell continues to operate under its established protocols. As the authorities begin preparations for the 2027-28 academic cycle, including the recruitment of subject experts for question paper development, the official examination structure remains unchanged.

Current MHT CET Examination Framework

At present, the MHT CET is conducted as a computer-based test, with the CET Cell managing the entire lifecycle of the examination. This includes the registration process, the allocation of test centres across the state, the issuance of admit cards, the administration of the test, and the subsequent declaration of results. The examination is held separately for the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) group and the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) group.

In recent years, the CET Cell introduced a bi-annual format, allowing candidates to appear for the examination twice. This policy was designed to provide students with a second opportunity to improve their scores, with the final admission process considering the candidate's best performance across the two attempts. This structure remains the standard procedure for the upcoming examination cycle, and students are advised to align their preparation with this existing format.

Implications of Proposed Changes

Should the authorities eventually decide to transition to an offline, single-day examination, it would represent a significant shift in the logistical and operational landscape of the MHT CET. A pen-and-paper format would require a complete overhaul of the current digital testing infrastructure. Furthermore, conducting the examination for all candidates on a single day would necessitate a massive expansion of physical testing centres and invigilation resources to accommodate the high volume of aspirants simultaneously.

It is important for students and parents to note that these proposals remain in the realm of discussion. The CET Cell has not issued any notification or information brochure confirming a move away from the computer-based format. Until an official announcement is made, the current examination pattern, syllabus, and procedures remain in effect. Aspirants are encouraged to rely solely on updates published through official channels to ensure they are adequately prepared for the 2027 examination cycle.
