The anticipation for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2026 rankings is building as institutions across India have completed their data submissions. While the official release is expected soon, prospective students and parents are currently looking back at historical performance trends to gauge the standing of the country’s premier engineering colleges. A review of the rankings from 2021 to 2025 reveals a clear narrative regarding the competitive landscape between the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
Data from the past five years demonstrates that the IITs continue to maintain a firm grip on the top positions within the engineering category. However, select NITs have demonstrated remarkable consistency and, in some cases, significant improvement, allowing them to remain highly competitive against both established and newer IITs. This historical data serves as a valuable reference point for students evaluating their options for higher education.
Throughout the 2021–2025 period, NIT Tiruchirappalli has consistently stood out as the highest-ranked NIT in the country. It secured the 9th position in 2021, climbed to 8th in 2022, and maintained the 9th spot from 2023 through 2025. In the most recent 2025 rankings, NIT Tiruchirappalli was the only NIT to feature in the top 10, achieving a score of 68.14 and placing it ahead of several IITs in the national engineering list.
The top tier of the rankings remains dominated by the IITs, with IIT Madras holding the number one spot consistently over the five-year window. Other institutions, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur, have also maintained their status as the leading engineering hubs in India. In 2025, these institutions, along with IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Guwahati, occupied the first eight positions, followed by NIT Tiruchirappalli at rank 9.
While the top positions remain stable, other prominent NITs have shown varied performance trajectories. NIT Rourkela has demonstrated a notable upward trend, improving from rank 20 in 2021 to its best performance of rank 13 in 2025. With a score of 66.62, it successfully outperformed several institutions, including IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in the 2025 rankings.
Conversely, NIT Karnataka, Surathkal, has experienced a shift in its standing. After holding the 10th position in both 2021 and 2022, the institute moved to rank 12 in 2023 and has been placed at rank 17 for the past two years. Despite this shift, it remains firmly within the top 20 engineering institutes nationally. Other institutions such as NIT Calicut and NIT Warangal have also maintained their presence in the top 30, with NIT Calicut ranked 21st and NIT Warangal ranked 28th in the 2025 edition. As the 2026 rankings approach, these historical trends provide a clear picture of the competitive gap and the evolving standards among India's top-tier technical universities.
