The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has released the admission framework for the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) 2027. This entrance exam serves as the gateway for students seeking admission into Bachelor of Design (BDes) programmes across seven prominent technical institutions in India. For the 2027-28 academic cycle, the participating institutes include IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur.
The examination is scheduled to take place on January 17, 2027, with the testing window set from 9 am to 12 noon. Prospective students are currently able to register for the exam, as the online application process commenced on October 1, 2026. The deadline for submitting regular applications is October 31, 2026, and candidates are encouraged to complete their registration via the official UCEED portal at uceed.iitb.ac.in.
To be considered for admission, candidates must meet specific academic and age-related requirements. Regarding the qualifying examination, applicants must have passed their Class 12 or an equivalent board examination in either 2026 or 2027. Individuals who first appeared for their qualifying examination in 2025 or earlier are not eligible to participate in the 2027 admission cycle.
Age restrictions are also in place, differentiated by category. Candidates belonging to the OPEN, EWS, and OBC-NCL categories must have been born on or after October 1, 2002. For those in the SC, ST, and PwD categories, the birth date must be on or after October 1, 1997. Furthermore, subject requirements vary depending on the chosen institute. While students from the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) are eligible for all seven participating institutes, students from other academic backgrounds—including Arts, Commerce, and Humanities, or Science streams without the mandatory PCM combination—are eligible to apply to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Indore.
It is important for candidates to distinguish between qualifying for the entrance exam and the subsequent admission process. Qualifying for UCEED 2027 and obtaining a rank is the first step. Once the results are announced, qualified candidates must submit a separate common BDes application to participate in the joint seat allocation process managed by the UCEED Office at IIT Bombay.
During the application phase, students are required to indicate their preferred institutes. The final seat allocation will be conducted based on these preferences and the candidate's performance in the entrance examination. Applicants are advised to review the specific requirements of each institution, such as the IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay or the Design Discipline at IIITDM Jabalpur, to ensure they meet all necessary criteria before the application deadline.
