The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) has reported a significant rise in student intake for BTech and BPharm programmes for the 2026 academic year. Official data released by the West Bengal Higher Education Minister, Jagannath Chattopadhyay, reveals a 75.4 percent growth in total admissions compared to the previous year, marking a substantial shift in the state's technical education landscape.

According to the minister’s announcement, the total number of students successfully placed in BTech and BPharm courses reached 27,599 in 2026, a notable increase from the 15,729 students admitted during the 2025 cycle. This growth is largely attributed to the implementation of a new decentralised counselling process designed to fill vacant seats across participating institutions.

Impact of Decentralised Counselling on Admission Numbers

The surge in enrollment figures is primarily linked to the introduction of the Decentralised Counselling (DCAP) process, which was conducted in two phases. While centralised counselling accounted for 11,190 student placements, the new decentralised initiative successfully facilitated an additional 16,409 admissions. This two-tiered approach allowed for fresh registrations and choice-filling, providing students with multiple opportunities to secure seats based on their preferences.

During the DCAP process, candidates were eligible for multiple seat allocations, which were finalised upon the payment of a seat acceptance fee. This flexibility appears to have been a key factor in reducing the number of unfilled seats in engineering and pharmacy colleges across the state.

Broader Trends in West Bengal Undergraduate Admissions

Beyond the technical streams, the state also observed a positive trend in general undergraduate admissions. Minister Chattopadhyay noted that the combined statistics for the West Bengal Centralised Admission Process (WBCAP) and the West Bengal Decentralised Admission Process (WBDAP) showed an overall increase of 49.9 percent. Total undergraduate enrollments rose from 2,61,692 in 2025 to 3,92,227 in 2026.

Within this broader undergraduate framework, the centralised process accounted for 3,78,931 students, while the decentralised process contributed 13,296 enrollments. These figures reflect a comprehensive effort by the state’s higher education authorities to streamline the admission process and maximise seat occupancy across various degree programmes.
