The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has officially inaugurated its first academic programme at the Sonipat campus, marking a significant expansion of the institution's educational footprint. The newly launched one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Solar Systems and Management is being conducted in partnership with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Institut National de l'Énergie Solaire (INES) in France.
The inaugural batch of this specialized programme consists of nine international fellows representing eight different countries. The course is being delivered by the Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE) at IIT Delhi, with the curriculum structured to provide intensive, hands-on training in solar technology and its practical applications. The programme is financially supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Throughout the one-year duration of the diploma, participants will receive instruction from a combination of IIT Delhi faculty members, subject matter experts, and industry partners. The training is designed to build technical expertise that can be directly applied to the energy needs of the fellows' home nations. Following the completion of their coursework at the Sonipat campus, the fellows are scheduled to undertake a one-month internship in Europe, where they will focus on advanced applied solar technologies.
Upon the conclusion of their internship, the fellows will be assigned to Solar Technology Application Resource Centres (STAR-C) in their respective countries. These centers are intended to serve as hubs for innovation and skill development, aiming to accelerate the deployment of solar energy, foster the creation of green jobs, and support sustainable economic growth within ISA member nations.
Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, the Professor-in-Charge of the IIT Delhi Sonipat campus, highlighted the launch as a major milestone for the institution. He noted that the introduction of this diploma is part of a broader Framework for Action (FFA) established between IIT Delhi and the International Solar Alliance earlier this year. Looking ahead, the institute plans to leverage the Sonipat facility to introduce additional academic programmes in the coming years, further strengthening its commitment to specialized technical education.
