The Indian Ports Association (IPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with C3iHub, IIT Kanpur, under the Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE) initiative. This collaboration aims to support India’s transition from digitized ports to fully automated smart ports through a phased approach.
The partnership will focus on implementing cybersecurity controls, developing specialized skills for port authorities, and designing cybersecurity policies tailored for the maritime sector. As Indian ports adopt automation and advanced digital technologies, ensuring resilience against cyber threats is crucial. The initiative is expected to enhance security, efficiency, and innovation in the maritime ecosystem, establishing India as a global leader in smart port development.
Shri Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of IPA, emphasized that the MoU aligns with their vision of transforming Indian ports into world-class smart ports. He mentioned that collaboration with C3iHub-IIT Kanpur would advance automation while strengthening cybersecurity frameworks to protect digital assets. He acknowledged that the global community is observing India’s progress in this domain.
Shri Vikas Narwal, Managing Director of IPA, stated that the future of port operations depends on secure digital ecosystems. He expressed confidence that this partnership would accelerate transformation while ensuring cybersecurity remains a priority. He added that the collaboration would strengthen global confidence in India’s maritime security capabilities.
IIT Kanpur, known for its expertise in cybersecurity research, will contribute research-driven insights, technological solutions, and skill development programs. Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed pride in supporting IPA’s vision of secure and smart port operations, considering it an opportunity to showcase India’s technological leadership.
Prof. Sandeep K. Shukla, Project Director of C3iHub, noted that as ports become more automated, cybersecurity must evolve accordingly. He highlighted the focus on securing digital infrastructures and fostering innovation.
