Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur’s Computer Centre commemorated Safer Internet Day 2025 by organizing a cybersecurity awareness workshop at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kanpur. The event, conducted in line with the global theme "Together for a Better Internet," brought together around 95 students and teachers for an informative session on digital safety and responsible internet use.
Dr. Debpriya Basu Roy, Assistant Professor of Computer Science Engineering at IIT Kanpur, led the interactive workshop, which focused on contemporary cybersecurity concerns. Participants were introduced to both common and advanced cyber threats that young internet users frequently encounter.
Highlighting the necessity of digital safety in today's interconnected world, Dr. Basu Roy emphasized that the workshop aimed to equip students with practical tools and knowledge to navigate the internet securely. The active participation and enthusiasm demonstrated by attendees underscored the significance of such educational initiatives.
The session covered a broad spectrum of cybersecurity topics, including emerging threats, best practices in cyber hygiene, case studies of recent cyber incidents, and protocols for reporting security breaches. Engaging demonstrations and interactive discussions further reinforced key concepts, ensuring participants gained hands-on insights into safe internet practices.
This initiative is part of a larger national campaign led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to promote responsible digital habits among India's younger generation. IIT Kanpur’s involvement reflects its commitment to social responsibility and the advancement of digital literacy in educational institutions.
Participants responded positively to the workshop, with both students and faculty acknowledging its practical relevance in an increasingly technology-driven world. The success of the event reaffirmed the need for continuous cybersecurity education, especially for younger users who face growing digital risks.
IIT Kanpur’s Computer Centre intends to conduct similar sessions throughout the year, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a well-informed and cyber-aware student community. These efforts align with the broader global mission of promoting a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
