The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has officially launched a new digital learning platform named 'AVNI - Grow with Nature'. This initiative, developed by the institute’s Centre of Excellence in AI for Digital Agriculture, ANNAM.AI, aims to provide children with an interactive way to engage with the natural world, specifically focusing on plants, crops, and the fundamentals of agriculture.

By leveraging artificial intelligence, the platform encourages students to move beyond traditional textbook learning and instead utilize their immediate surroundings as a classroom. Whether it is a plant in a school garden, a piece of fruit at home, or crops growing in a nearby field, the app is designed to turn everyday observations into educational opportunities.

Key Features and Educational Functionality

The AVNI platform is accessible via both web and mobile interfaces, ensuring that it is easily available for young learners. A central feature of the application is its AI-based identification tool, which allows children to scan or identify various plants, vegetables, fruits, and crops. Once a plant is identified, the app provides detailed information regarding its significance and characteristics, helping children build a foundational understanding of agricultural science.

To cater to a diverse range of users, the platform is available in both English and Hindi. Recognizing the needs of younger children who may not yet be proficient readers, the developers have also integrated audio content into the application. Furthermore, the platform includes several interactive modules such as a Digital Nature Book, a Nature Gallery, and a 'Crop Compare' feature. These tools are designed to help students record their findings, track their learning progress, and analyze the differences between various types of vegetation, including millets, cereals, and spices.

Encouraging Practical Learning

According to the development team at IIT Ropar, the primary objective of the project is to introduce children to agricultural concepts before they encounter the subject in a formal academic setting. By incorporating 'Daily Challenges', the app motivates students to actively explore their environment and document their discoveries. Dr. Mukesh Saini, the Co-project Director of ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar, led the development of the platform, emphasizing a pedagogical approach that prioritizes hands-on exploration over passive reading.
