Mumbai University Launches Apprenticeship-Embedded BE Degree Programme

The University of Mumbai has officially launched an Apprenticeship-Embedded B.E. Degree Programme, marking a significant shift in its engineering curriculum. This new initiative, falling under the university's Faculty of Science and Technology, is designed to integrate one year of professional industry experience directly into the undergraduate engineering path.

By bridging the divide between academic theory and practical application, the university aims to better prepare students for the demands of the modern engineering sector. The programme has been developed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and follows the established guidelines set forth by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Programme Structure and Academic Credits

Under this new model, students selected for the apprenticeship will spend their seventh and eighth semesters immersed in an industry environment. This hands-on training is intended to provide participants with direct exposure to professional engineering operations, real-world projects, and standard industry practices.

To successfully complete the apprenticeship component, students are required to log a minimum of 1,260 hours of practical training. Upon the successful completion of these hours, participants will be awarded 42 academic credits, which are fully integrated into their B.E. degree requirements. This structure ensures that the time spent in the industry is formally recognized as a core part of the students' academic progression.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Participation in this apprenticeship-based route is currently limited to a maximum of 15% of the total final-year B.E. student population. To be considered for the programme, candidates must have achieved a minimum CGPA of 6.75 by the conclusion of their fifth semester. The selection process will be merit-based, with priority given to students who hold higher CGPAs.

The university has also clarified certain exclusions regarding the programme. Students who are currently enrolled in Honours, Minor, or Honours with Research tracks are not eligible to opt for this apprenticeship-embedded route. This ensures that the programme remains focused on students pursuing the standard B.E. curriculum who wish to gain intensive industry exposure before graduation.
