National Dental Commission Updates Eligibility Criteria for BDS Admissions 2026

The National Dental Commission (NDC) has issued a formal notification to state counselling authorities, outlining updated eligibility requirements for students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme for the 2026 academic session. The new guidelines clarify that securing a qualifying score in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) is no longer the sole requirement for securing a seat in a dental college.

Under the revised regulations, candidates must now meet specific academic benchmarks in their senior secondary examinations in addition to their performance in the national entrance test. This policy change is intended to ensure that students possess a foundational academic proficiency in core science subjects before commencing their dental education.

Revised Academic Requirements and Subject Criteria

To be eligible for admission, students must achieve a minimum aggregate score in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Biotechnology in their Class 12 board examinations. For candidates in the general category, the requirement is set at a minimum of 50 per cent marks in these subjects combined. A relaxation is provided for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), who are required to maintain a minimum aggregate of 40 per cent in the same subject grouping.

Beyond the aggregate requirement, the NDC has stipulated that candidates must pass each core subject individually. This includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English. The commission has explicitly stated that failing to meet the specified aggregate marks in the Class 12 science subjects will result in the loss of seat eligibility, regardless of the candidate's performance in the NEET examination.

Impact on the Admission Process

The notification serves as a directive to all state-level counselling authorities responsible for managing dental college admissions. By integrating these academic performance standards with NEET results, the NDC aims to standardise the selection process across the country. Prospective students are advised to review these updated criteria carefully, as the combination of NEET scores and board exam performance will now be strictly enforced for all applicants during the 2026 admission cycle.
